When Rosa arrived at Davis Community Meals and Housing after 30 years of homelessness and addiction, she didn’t just need a roof over her head. She needed a comprehensive support system that could help her navigate the complicated journey back into society. Today, as we celebrate nearly three years of Rosa’s sobriety and stability, her story illustrates how DCMH’s holistic approach makes lasting recovery possible.

More Than Just Housing
For Rosa, one of the most significant aspects of DCMH is the affordability of housing that doesn’t overwhelm residents who are rebuilding their lives.
“The rent here is not so high that we don’t get overwhelmed,” Rosa explains. “We’ve been on the streets for so long that any little thing is overwhelming.”
After decades on the streets, even basic life management tasks can be challenging. “Even making appointments for myself and remembering my appointments… I had to have somebody constantly tell me, ‘Don’t forget this, don’t forget that,'” she shares.
This understanding of the unique challenges faced by those transitioning from chronic homelessness shapes every aspect of our program design at DCMH.
Personalized Support for Individual Needs
Throughout her interview, Rosa references the many ways DCMH staff have provided personalized assistance tailored to her specific needs:
Technological Support: “I have difficulty with reading things,” Rosa explains, noting how Silas helps her read important documents and navigate technology. “I don’t know how to get on the computer. I don’t know how to do this, I don’t know. So he helps me send my check stubs to where I have to send them.”
This support is crucial for Rosa, who works part-time while receiving SSI benefits, a situation that requires regular reporting and documentation.
Resource Navigation: Our case management team, including the “ladies downstairs” Becky and Harmony, Rosa mentions, helps connect community members with vital resources. Rosa recalls bringing a homeless friend with children to DCMH: “They gave her numbers and they gave her food… they gave the services to her.”
Life Skills Development: Rosa appreciates the structure and accountability DCMH provides. “They come and inspect our apartments,” she notes. “I need that because I’m the baby of six… So that keeps me on my toes.”
Building Community, Not Just Housing
Perhaps the most transformative aspect of DCMH is the sense of community that develops among residents. Rosa describes this as essential to her recovery:
“We have a movie night here. We have breakfast day. We have a community, we get together and we play bingo. It’s great. It’s really great, you know, and there’s a lot of love here.”
These community activities might seem simple, but they’re powerful antidotes to the isolation that often accompanies homelessness and addiction. They help residents rebuild social skills and create positive support networks.
Rosa notes with amazement that many fellow residents share her recovery journey: “From this door to that door, everybody came from Walter’s House [treatment program].”
This organic community of people with shared experiences creates natural peer support that reinforces recovery efforts.
The Caring Difference
When asked what makes DCMH different from the 15 previous programs she attempted, Rosa emphasizes the authentic care shown by staff:
“You could tell they are really loving people, they want to help, they want to encourage you, they want to build you up.” This genuine concern contrasts with places where staff might be “just doing it for a check.”
At the same time, Rosa appreciates that staff maintain clear boundaries and expectations: “If you’re doing anything wrong, they’re gonna let you know, they’re very firm.”
This balance of compassion and accountability creates the optimal environment for growth and recovery.
