Rosa | From 30 Years on the Streets to a Life Restored

At Davis Community Meals and Housing, we witness powerful transformations every day. But few stories demonstrate the life-changing impact of our services as poignantly as Rosa’s journey.

Three Decades of Struggle

For 30 years, Rosa was unhoused battling heroin addiction. She cycled through 15 different treatment programs, but each time she completed one, she faced the same devastating reality: nowhere to go but back to the streets.

“Every time I came out of a program, there was nowhere for me to go but back to the streets,” Rosa shares. “I really believe that people need to have programs like this where they can come and have a safe place to restore their mind and restore their self-worth.”

The harsh reality of homelessness wore on Rosa daily. Cold nights with nowhere to sleep. The constant hunger. The overwhelming fear of withdrawal symptoms. And for women especially, the ever-present danger of violence.

“Women go through a lot. They get beat up … there’s a lot of stuff going on out there,” Rosa explains. The toll of this existence extends beyond physical hardship, it erodes one’s sense of self-worth, purpose, and hope.

The Turning Point

After three decades trapped in this cycle, Rosa’s life changed when she overdosed. Following her hospitalization, she was offered both treatment and medication to help manage her addiction. Having just lost her partner of nine years, Rosa was ready for change.

But what truly cemented her determination was seeing her own son suffering while homeless.

“Seeing him destroyed me,” Rosa recalls. “I said, I can’t live like this anymore. How can I help him if I can’t help myself? I had to be an example.”

Tragically, while Rosa found her way to recovery, her son later died from an overdose hours before entering a treatment program. He left behind two young children. This devastating loss has further fueled Rosa’s commitment to helping others find their way to recovery.

Finding Home at DCMH

Today, Rosa has been clean for nearly three years. She has secure housing at Davis Community Meals and Housing, holds a job, owns a car, and actively participates in her church community. At age 60, she’s building the life she once thought impossible.

“If we didn’t have this place, we would have not made it. We would have gone back out into the streets,” Rosa says. “I’ve done 15 programs. I never made it until there was somewhere for me to go, and I thank God for that.”

At DCMH, Rosa found more than just housing. She found a supportive community, staff who genuinely care, and the dignity of having her own space at a rent she can afford.

“These are loving people. They want to help. They want to encourage you, they want to build you up,” Rosa says of our staff. She specifically mentions how Silas helps her navigate paperwork and technology challenges, while our case management team connects people with vital resources.

Looking Forward with Hope

Rosa’s transformation extends beyond her own life. She’s breaking what she calls the “generational curse” of addiction in her family.

“It stops here,” she affirms. “If I could change the way I’m living, my children will follow along with me, and their children won’t have to go through what we all have been through.”

Now Rosa dreams of becoming a drug and alcohol counselor to help others find their way out of addiction. She already volunteers, sharing her story with those just beginning their recovery journey.

“I was the woman that was never gonna make it. I was gonna die out there,” Rosa reflects. “I want to give hope back, that if I can do it, you can do it too. This place gave that to me. You know, it’s never too late.”

The Critical Need

Rosa’s story highlights the critical importance of programs like Davis Community Meals and Housing. Without transitional and affordable housing options, people completing treatment programs often have nowhere to go but back to the streets, where the cycle of addiction and homelessness continues.

“We need more programs. We need more help,” Rosa emphasizes. She sees people of all ages suffering on the streets, including elderly individuals with mobility issues who struggle even more with homelessness.

As Rosa poignantly states: “There is hope for people out there that are on drugs, that are homeless, that have children. There is a way out. There is love. There’s hope, and there’s a way out. You don’t have to live like that.”
